Food safety during 2024 Mid-Autumn Festival

During festivals and holidays, the Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the occasions with high demand for various types of food such as cakes, jams, candies, beer, wine and soft drinks. To ensure food safety, prevent food poisoning and protect the rights, interests and health of consumers, the province issued the Plan No. 48/KH-BCĐATTP on August 13, 2024 by provincial Food Safety Steering Committee. This plan aims at implementing food safety measures for the 2024 Mid-Autumn Festival in the province, focusing on strengthening public information campaigns and conducting inter-sectoral inspection tours of food production and business establishments.

Provincial Department of Health has also issued the Decision No. 756/QĐ-SYT on August 16, 2024, establishing an inter-sectoral inspection team to assess food safety compliance at province-based food production and business establishments during the 2024 Mid-Autumn Festival. The team will inspect compliance with regulations on food safety, including certifications, commitments, health checks, food safety knowledge certifications for workers, product announcements, advertising, traceability…

In addition, violations will be strictly handled under the law. The inspection took place from August 27, 2024 to September 6, 2024, covering 12 establishments, including three managed by the health sector, four by agriculture and rural development, three by industry and trade, two by market management.

Relevant sectors have closely coordinated to ensure consistency in inspection activities regarding food safety. This helps food production and business establishments comply with regulations, protecting consumers’rights, interests and health.

The inspection results during the Mid-Autumn Festival revealed some establishments that did not fully comply with food safety regulations such as using expired food safety certificates. The inspection team discovered one such violation and recommended provincial Department of Health to impose an administrative fine of VND 35 million for food safety violations.

Strengthening public awareness of food safety for food production and business establishments through the mass media is crucial to ensure that they receive accurate, timely information while raising their awareness of food safety in both production and business, minimizing the risk of food poisoning among consumers.

In addition, sectors must continuously strengthen specialized and inter-sectoral inspections of high-risk food production and business establishments, monitor and assess the risk of food contamination and conduct post-market quality inspections of products after their release…
