Working as a truck driver, Lam got to know about hens giving more eggs. Through his investigation, he realized that rearing such hens was much easier. By 2006, he test-tried the first 200 hens supported by his own funding of VND 50 million from loans of Bank of Social Policies.
After two weeks, 180 hens gave eggs which were sold out at VND 1,700 per egg. Earning more interest, Lam continued to expand his farm to yield higher income. Up to date, he has 1,800 hens giving 1,500 eggs everyday which was worth about VND 500,000.
Taking advantage of his farm space, Lam reared vipers. By 2011, he went to Tay Ninh to visit his friend’s farmstead in Trang Bang where he received 50 vipers to start rearing.
Returning home, local Farmer Association granted him VND 10 million of loan, the started rearing vipers together with the on-going successful hens giving eggs. Currently, he has 50 bread vipers and 200 baby vipers giving him annual income of about VND 70 million. Vipers are priced by their weight, i.e. a viper of 1.7kg is priced VND 500,000 a kilo, 1.2kg from VND 380,000 to VND 400,000 a kilo, viper eggs VND 120,000 an egg, baby viper VND 160,000 a viper.
Aside from rearing vipers and hens, he added catfish and python to his farm. Annually, he could earn stable income.
