Ms. Pham Thi Kim Chung (L) was giving instruction to student at the honeydew orchard. Ms. Pham Thi Kim Chung, who was born in Nghe An and is now a lecturer of Agriculture Faculty of Binh Duong Agriculture Forestry Professional Secondary School at Dinh Hoa ward TDM City, is in charge of taking care of the school’s honeydew orchard.She used to be a student of HCM City Agriculture Forestry University. After graduation, she studied abroad and simultaneously was a apprentice in Israel to learn about advanced planting techniques having high quality and productivity. Ms. Chung said: “I transferred honeydew planting technique to some provincial farmers. According to these farmers, growing honeydew triples the interest compared to start-up capital. Honeydew can be harvested after 65 – 70 days. The most important thing is that the output is relatively stable. Currently, honeydew is sold at orchards with a price of about VND21,000 per kilogram, mainly to domestic supermarkets and are exported to Japan and some other countries”.According to Ms. Chung, honeydew is a cultivar group of cucurbit family, has hard skin, and with ribs knitting together like a net on its skin. Honeydew melon contains a lot of water, less sugar and is antipyretic. This plant is grown popularly in many countries like Japan, Korea etc. In Vietnam, honeydew has been planted in high-tech agricultural zones in HCM City, Binh Duong province in recent years. Honeydew is planted in net house, which is a technique from Israel and has nets on each house’s side to prevent insects. The roof is made from plastic canvass to shelter from rain and wind. Honeydew tree is planted in large gourd and lined with plastic canvass so that the tree does not connect to the ground.Water is dripped into honeydew trees through pipelines of watering machine in accordance with age of tree and weather’s condition. Fertilizers are blended with water system, and have to ensure sufficient nutrients for good growth of tree. Honeydew is taken care carefully, thus has high quality, and is loved by most of people. At the present, honeydew is grown according to VietGap and Gapglobal standard assuring food safety.Honeydew orchard of Binh Duong Agriculture Forestry Professional Secondary School was invested to produce and for students to practice. Ms. Chung said, honeydew can be harvested soon. This tree also has less diseases, requires low cost. A 50m2 orchard can bring over VND30mln each crop. Lecturers and students of the school also succeeded in growing other plants like tomato, cucumber, French lettuce and some other vegetables.
