According to provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the whole province has had a total of around 143.96 hectares of land for urban agricultural production with hi-tech economic models, contributing to increasing incomes for the local people.
Stable incomes
Doan Lai Uyen residing in Bau Bang district said that under the policy of the district’s People’s Committee in boosting urban and hi-tech agricultural development, he bravely expanded his orchid garden by 1,000 square meters. Currently, the average price of orchids at his garden is sold at between VND200,000 and VND400,000 per pot. For precious orchids, they cost between VND1million and VND2million per pot. He can secure more than VND100million in profit from his orchid garden every year.

The model of growing wild orchids brings Doan Lai Uyen a high income
He is also very successful in wild orchid multiplication. Every year, he can earn nearly VND150million from supplying many varieties of wild orchids to the market.
Nguyen Huu Chi, Secretary of the district’s Party Committee said that along with hi-tech agricultural models, urban agricultural ones have loomed large across the district, bringing the local farmers high and stable incomes. In addition to the orchid model of Doan Lai Uyen, there are the mushroom model of Lai Hung communal Mushroom Cooperative; the pepper model of Huynh Doan Thong in Lai Uyen commune…with the average income of between VND100million-VND300million per year.
In TDM city, the model of growing orchids like Mokara, Dendro, Ho Diep, Cattleya…is selected by many households because their tendance is very easy. Le Van Dat, the owner of an orchid garden in Dinh Hoa ward said that he took full advantage of nearly 1,000 square meters in the precinct of his house for orchid cultivation with the monthly profit of around VND12million. If orchids have good prices, his family can secure nearly VND500million in profit from the agricultural model.
Lever policies
In 2012, provincial People’s Committee promulgated a decision on “Solutions, policies for agricultural development under hi-tech, urban agricultural models in association with processing industry for the period of 2012-2015”. Following this was the Decision No.04/2016/QD-UBND of provincial People’s Committee on “Encouragement of agricultural development under hi-tech, urban agricultural models for the period of 2016-2020”.
All have created favorable conditions for locals to get preferential loans to develop hi-tech, urban agricultural models from provincial-level State budget through provincial Development Investment Fund. So far, provincial Development Investment Fund has verified 58 production methods, announced the grant of loans for 41 eligible ones with VND228billion approved.
Huynh Van Lam, Vice-Chairman of Bau Bang district’s Farmers’ Association said that with the Decision No.04, farmers have a chance to get access to loans in order to develop hi-tech, urban agricultural models. The district has also implemented a lot of loan giving programs by many forms for farmers getting involved in this field.
Possibly speaking, policies at central and provincial levels are seen as a lever for the province’s urban agriculture to reach rapid growth. The development of urban agriculture also plays an important role in the local urban development via improving urban landscapes, supplying clean food sources to city dwellers…
