Lack of containers, businesses in difficulty

Bad effects of the COVID-19 have made long-haul orders not be released in time. Additionally, Vietnam does not have container manufacturers, causing many domestic exporters to be afflicted, container charges to increase 3-4 times more than normal price. Many businesses have backlogs of export orders to the US and Europe because there are no containers. These are all conventional orders that companies have signed contracts since beginning of the year. And the delay continues, companies will lose their credibility and lose partners.

Due to this shortage, companies must win each other to have containers to pack exports. Shipping companies take advantage of this to increase freight rates continuously. Shipping rates have increased rapidly, up to 4-5 times compared to normal price, making it more difficult for small businesses to export individual containers. Furthermore, the fact that goods have to wait is causing heavy damage to SMEs, because the cost is estimated to rise from 10-20% of the shipment value. Shipping time is longer, affect the quality of goods, while leased warehouse have to pay rent, financial capacity is weak; thus competitiveness has become weaker and weaker.

Proactive container production is a solution. However, this solution could not be implemented immediately and faces many difficulties. Container is a type of packaging with specific technical regulations; must be verified in terms of quality to be recognized and circulated around the world to transport goods.
