Owing to reasons of environmental pollution, flood-tide, competition with imported fruits, many orchards along Sai Gon river of Thuan An town were in risk of elimination. However, with proper and timely policies, Lai Thieu orchards have regained their position.
In the face of the rapid decline of mangosteen gardens in Thuan An town, relevant agencies set out effective measures to end the decrease and mapped out feasible and sustainable plans.
Many mangosteen gardens are under revival.
Improvements of environmental pollution and An Son – Lai Thieu dyke, losses for the orchards have been decreased sharply. In 2006, the provincial People’s Committee issued a decision No.106 on improving orchards and supporting 20% of fertilizer cost for farmers. The town now has 1,100ha of mangosteen trees in An Thanh ward, Binh Nham, Hung Dinh and An Son communes.
Since 2008, every year has 2 periods of fertilize cost support, each worth over VND600mil for over 1,000 households. The support has contributed to bring joy for farmers to improve their orchards. Nguyen Huu Hanh, head of An Thanh ward orchard club said that compared to previous years, orchards herein now show a new vitality.
Thanks to application of advances of technical science, the town’s orchards show good development. From An Son to Hung Dinh, An Thanh, Binh Nham show mangosteen gardens heavy with fruits.
Farmer Nguyen Vinh Hoa in Thanh Phu quarter, An Thanh ward has possessed a 4,000sqm mangosteen garden with 70 trees, of which many trees are 140 years old. He calculated that with about VND20,000/kg, he will reap about one hundred million in this year’s crop.
Thuan An town has promoted registration of Lai Thieu mangosteen trademark. Once getting recognition of quality from authorized agencies, Thuan An mangosteen’s output will be more stable.
With proper policies and determination of farmers, it is sure that orchards along Sai Gon River will not only generate jobs for many people but also become an eco-tourism destination for tourists.
