Mother cow-breeding club helps farmers in Phu Giao escape poverty

Since its inception in 2003, Tan Hiep commune’s mother cow-breeding model in Phu Giao district has helped many households escape poverty and stabilize their lives.

Households escaping poverty thanks to VND5mln in loan

Tan Hiep was a poor commune of Phu Giao district and the whole province in the early 1990s. Thanks to land borrowed from the commune’s cooperative, many households have risen up out of poverty and secure a stable life.

Do Duy Lieu, a resident in hamlet 2 said that his family used the land borrowed from the local cooperative to develop home-based business. Also thanks to VND5mln in loan from the 120 Job Plan of the local Farmers’ Association, he got involved in the model of breeding cows.

Tan Hiep commune’s mother cow-breeding club has contributed to help many households escape poverty

With the attention and help of the local authorities plus his efforts, Lieu and his family now own 4 hectares of cashew, 2 hectares of rubber and 1 fish pond of thousands of meters. His children are also very successful in life and business.

Like Lieu’s family, the family of Nguyen Thi Chuong in hamlet 3 also escaped poverty, due to VND5mln in loan from the local Bank for Social Policies. She said that VND5mln was a great asset for her family at that time. Under the support of the local authorities, she has bravely got involved in the mother cow-breeding model, helping her family secure a stable life.

In addition to the two above families, many other families in Tan Hiep commune were free from poverty in that way.

Efficiency from mother cow-breeding club

The mother cow-breeding model in Tan Hiep commune has brought efficiency during the process of realizing the local hunger eradication and poverty reduction program. For better development, the commune’s mother cow-breeding club was set up.

According to statistics, Tan Hiep commune’s mother cow-breeding club has so far bred 127 cows and buffaloes. The executive board of the club has also frequently encouraged members to further develop their cow and buffalo herds while requiring relevant agencies to assist them in loan, technical ways…for better development.

This club has also contributed to reducing the number of the local poor households. The whole commune now only has 17 poor households under the old poverty line, reducing by 163 households compared to 2006.

However, according to Nguyen Quoc Huong, secretary of Tan Hiep communal Party Committee, foot-and-mouth disease has hit many breeding households in the commune in recent years. Some have changed to breeding other animals like pigs, chickens…, making the number of the local cows and buffaloes under the downward trend.

Before the above situation, the local authorities and the executive board of the club are making efforts to help the local breeders recover their cow herds, actively contributing to promoting the local program on hunger eradication and poverty reduction.
