Orchard development in association with ecotourism

Dau Tieng district’s farming land now accounts for over 80% of the local natural land. Of these, there are more than 567 hectares of fruit trees, including around 79.7 hectares of mangosteens, mainly in Thanh Tuyen commune. Over the past time, with provincial People’s Committee’s support policies, the district’s agricultural sector developed new models, comprising of a mangosteens-growing model in association with ecotourism development. The model has been promoted in Thanh Tuyen commune.

Great potential

Thanh Tuyen commune in Dau Tieng district has a favorable geographical position bordering three localities: Binh Duong, Tay Ninh and HCM city. Agricultural production is an economic strong point of the commune. The whole commune now has more than 215 hectares of fruit trees like mangosteens, durians, guavas…The commune’s annual output of mangosteens reaches around 800 tons-1,000 tons. In recent three years, the commune’s mangosteens have achieved high prizes at delicious fruit contests for the southeastern region.

HCM city is implementing a project on expanding Cu Chi tunnel relic site in association with ecotourism development in Thanh Tuyen commune with 116 hectares in total. This is a chance for the commune to foster orchards along Saigon river in association with waterway tourism. Grasping this, Dau Tieng district has had a policy on developing Thanh Tuyen commune into a specialized area on growing mangosteens in order to promote ecological tourism along Saigon river, contributing to raising the local people’s income.

So far, the commune has had a total of more than 200 households growing mangosteens, contributing to changing the local rural image. The commune now has many outstanding farmers in growing this kind of tree. They are Nguyen Van Ty, Tran Van Sau, Le Van Me, Nguyen Van Tri…

Proper way

Being one of top mangosteen growers in applying Vietgap standards in Thanh Tuyen commune’s Suoi Cat hamlet, Nguyen Van Ty said that in recent years, the local mangosteen growers have not only set up linkage groups on production and consumption, but also made coherence in developing ecological sites, absorbing a large number of tourists.

He added that farmers in the commune have aimed at an agricultural model in combination with tourism. The project on developing a specialized area on growing mangosteens in association with ecotourism in the commune will be a chance for farmers to popularize their products as well as the district’s new rural and urban agricultural image in the future.

For orchard development in association with tourism in the district getting success, according to experts, along with sci-tech support, farmers need to be guided basic skills on tourism. The local functional agencies and travel units must build up a professional force on ecotourism for long-term development.

The district and the commune are actively carrying out the project. The objective of the project is to develop mangosteens into a kink of special food of the commune in association with ecotourism along Saigon river. If being implemented successfully, the project will greatly contribute to changing the local rural image and increasing locals’ income. This is seen as one of advantages for the commune’s socio-economic development in association with the national target program on new rural construction. The project will also create a tourism product combining between Thanh Tuyen orchards-Cu Chi tunnel-Dau Tieng reservoir-Cau mountain tourism site, even Ba Den mountain tourism site in Tay Ninh…
