In 2007, Thu Dau Mot City was recognized as a grade III city. Along with the economic transformation and strong development in the industry, trade and services, infrastructure of the city is also highlighted in development. In 2012, Thu Dau Mot was upgraded from the town to a provincial city. In 3 years of 2012-2014, the city has been fast urbanized with many roads, residential areas and urban areas newly built and completed for use. Especially, since 2014, after Thu Dau Mot has been recognized by the Prime Minister as a grade II city, the Party, authorities and people of Thu Dau Mot have joined forces to build a prosperous city in civilized, rich and beautiful manner with the sustainable criteria of "Green - Clean - Beauty".

In order to achieve the objectives and tasks of urban development, Thu Dau Mot City has concentrated its resources on investment in building and upgrading urban quality, perfecting urban criteria and achieving grade I urbanization. After five years of implementation of Resolution 32-NQ / TU dated 19 February 2011 of the Provincial Party Committee on urban construction and development in Thu Dau Mot for 2011-2015, the development has been quite well and relatively synchronized. Total investment capital in this period of economic sectors of the city is VND 24,945 billion with state capital of VND 1,105 billion, non-State capital of VND 21,755 billion, and foreign direct investment of VND 2,085 billion. The city has implemented the general master plan of Thu Dau Mot urban area, the planning of the ward of 1/2000 scale, the plan for urban development in 2011-2015, urban construction management, and urban development under the planning and regulations of urban architecture management. In addition, the construction and development of the system of technical and social infrastructure have also been concentrated with investments in the city planning. The works have been focally invested regarding their appropriate scales. Particularly, Thu Dau Mot City has the advantage that the basic infrastructure of the industrial complex - service - urban area has been fully invested by the province while the industrial parks in the complex have been filled up.
For the project of urban housing, Thu Dau Mot City has invested in completing basic technical and social infrastructure in accordance with criteria of urban grade I. The development of a green and smart city has been gradually established to improve the quality of life for the people. In the field of transportation, many important projects and works in the city have been completed and put into use such as the streets and highways of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Nguyen Chi Thanh, and My Phuoc – Tan Van as well as roads to the central administrative center of the province connecting the existing urban and new urban areas in the industrial - service - urban complex. In addition, 307 roads have been upgraded and managed by the city, accounting for 82.6%. Water supply and drainage system in the area has also been invested into and expanded.
With the efforts and determination of the Party, authorities and people of Thu Dau Mot City, in December 2017, Thu Dau Mot was approved by the Prime Minister as a grade I city in Binh Duong Province.
Continual urban development promotion
Being recognized as a grade I city is an important milestone of the Party, government and people of Thu Dau Mot City; however, this is not the ultimate goal in urban construction of the city. After being recognized as a grade-I urban center, on the basis of revising the standards under the urban center classification, besides continuing to promote the group which has reached the maximum mark, the city shall continue to implement The solutions for raising the standard groups have not reached the maximum level and some standards have not been reached.
Nguyen Loc Ha, Deputy Secretary of Thu Dau Mot City People's Committee, said on the basis of Resolution No 17-NQ / TU dated 14-11-2016 of the provincial Party Committee on the continued construction and broadcast In the period of 2016-2020, in the coming years, the People's Committee will focus on effective implementation of programs and action plans. The city also effectively mobilizes resources of enterprises, people's participation and Land Development Fund of the province to invest in building and developing the city; To invest in a number of key works and projects to create motive force and create pervasive power for urban construction and development in the western and northwestern part of the city; At the same time, to embellish some existing urban areas along the direction of prioritizing the construction of public works, serving the daily-life needs and entertainment and recreation for the people.
