Mrs. Van is taking care of her orchid garden In 2004, Mrs. Van decided to quit rubber tapping to invest into orchid garden. She sacrificed 2 hectares of rubber trees to own over VND 100 million – the initial fund for her orchid garden.“It is silly of me to start with orchid without knowing anything about the plant,” she said. The first time she lost all her investment and had to start over. Being encouraged by her son, she decided to train herself a skillful gardener by attending courses offered by Thanh Tam School in Ho Chi Minh City. She was advised to plant mokara breed.As advised, she decided to sell all remaining 6 hectares of rubber trees to re-invest into the orchid garden. After two years, she succeeded in expanding the 20,000 mokara plants covering nearly 1,000 square meters.Currentlky, Mrs. Van could cut out 300 to 400 branches of orchid to supply to the market and VND 6,000 to VND 10,000 a branch depending on the length.Mrs. Van also supply breed orchids at averagely VND 40,000 to VND 50,000 a plant.Annually, Mrs. Van could supply over 100 pots of orchid during Tet Holiday at VND 4-5 million for large pot and VND 3-4 million for smaller pot.“Water does the tricks for mokara orchid,” she explained. For the time to come, she said, her garden would be expanded to 2,000 square meters to satisfy the needs.
