Planning helps in slaughterhouses management

PPC issued Decision No. 1529/QD-UB on the approval for adjustments and supplements to Binh Duong Province Cattle and poultry slaughterhouse system planning in 2016-2020 with orientations towards 2025. Accordingly, many slaughterhouses will be upgraded, expanded; some slaughterhouses will have to stop operations, because of being no longer suitable for local economic development.

Slaughterhouses will be concentrated in the north

Binh Duong has now about 50 slaughterhouses, mainly in au Bang, Phu Giao, Ben Cat and Tan Uyen ... It should be noted, in some central areas, like Di An, Thuan An, Thu Dau Mot, the number of slaughterhouses tends to fall, and there are now 10 slaughterhouses.

Mr. Mai Hung Dung, Vice Chairman of PPC, said this was an adjustment in the industrial, urban development strategy of the province. The urbanization process at these three areas has happened rapidly, thus the restriction on additional slaughterhouses is necessary to ensure a civilized urban environment. Besides, the development of slaughterhouses in northern areas will help provincial livestock sector to grow well, meet local needs and supply products for nearby provinces.

Slaughterhouses in Binh Duong supply nearly 23,000 poultry of all types, nearly 1,700 pigs, 42 cows per day; basically meeting local people and neighboring provinces’ demands. Mr. Tran Phu Cuong, Director of provincial Veterinary and Fishery Department, said the slaughterhouse planning ensured local people’s demands and provided a large amount of cattle, poultry meat for the market.

According to Decision No. 1529/QD-UB, some slaughterhouses in An Thanh (Thuan An Town), Hoa Loi (Ben Cat Town) ... were forced to shut down or relocated, because of being no longer suitable for local economic development and high environmental risks to residential areas. To “compensate" for this reduction, slaughterhouses in northern areas are allowed to expand to meet demands.

Strengthening slaughterhouse inspection

The inspection team of provincial Veterinary and Fishery Department has sampled and conducted urine rapid test on all swine of a slaughterhouse in Di An Town. There were 3 pigs tested positive for banned substances of Beta-agonist group and were forced to be destroyed. Mr Cuong said, some slaughterhouses still purchased animals without clear origin or containing pathogens, banned substances. Therefore, the planning was issued timely, when the province has been striving to build a healthy livestock industry.

According to provincial Veterinary and Fishery Department, the province currently has 440 pig farms with more than 457,000 swine. Regarding small private animal husbandry, the province has nearly 3,160 farms with more than 94,000 animals. Therefore, slaughterhouse planning is to stimulate outputs for farmers as well as to form a healthy livestock environment ensuring food safety for consumers. Provincial livestock sector is attempting to build disease free zones to meet strict requirements, as taking part in export markets in the future.
