Overcoming difficulties
Going along a small meandering road, we arrive at the effective model of fish breeding of Thai Hoa ward, Tan Uyen town. Chau Van Tam, chairman of the provincial ward Farmers’ Society said “in the past, here was a deserted muddy area. Since Dong’s family settlement, this land becomes more crowded”.
We arrive at Dong’s house when he is feeding fish. He revealed he attaches to fish breeding for nearly 10 years. From the Mekong province of Ca Mau, he started a new life in this land a decade ago.
In 2004, Dong rented a 2.8ha production land in Thai Hoa ward, Tan Uyen town to breed fish. At the time, this land was very deserted and a muddy area. Overcoming difficulties, he now enjoys with his right choice.
Success
With ambition and determination, Dong reaps success on breeding fish. Pointing fish ponds in the front of his house, he said that from 2004 to 2007, perch fish was not popular, so breeders enjoyed a big profit of about VND4-5bil. However, from 2008 to 2011, he faced loss, owing to oversupply. Therefore, he shifted to raise snakehead fish. At present, he harvests 3 times every two years with the production of about more than 100 tons of fish. From the mid-2013 until now, snakehead fish is priced at VND42,000-45,000 per kg, so he enjoys a profit of nearly VND10,000 per kg.
Dong added that the ward People’s Committee facilitates his production. Over the first 5 years, the People’s Committee did not collect tax and land lease fee, until the sixth year the ward administration only collect small amount of money of land lease fee.
In addition, he annually enjoys training classes on fish breeding technique, visited effective models of fish breeding. As a result, his fish breeding productivity is very high, helping his family enjoy a stable life.
