These days, it is very easy to see the joy of the owners of mangosteen gardens in Thanh Tuyen commune in Dau Tieng district. This year, there is a bumper crop of mangosteens in this land, opening many prospects for a specialized area on mangosteen trees in the near future.
Joy of a bumper crop
First mangosteen trees were planted in Thanh Tuyen commune more than 20 years ago. Since then, they have been developed in a spontaneous way. But, they have brought a great source of income to the local farmers in recent years.
Mangosteen trees herein have got valuable when there is a logical plan of the People’s Committee of Dau Tieng district. Many new mangosteen gardens have also begun with harvest. Therefore, the local farmers this year have had a bumper crop of mangosteens. Each hectare of growing mangosteen trees herein reaches the average output of between 6 and 8 tons with the selling price of between VND40,000 and VND50,000, bringing the local farmers several hundreds of millions of dong in profit.
Eight years ago, Nguyen Van Ty, a farmer in Thanh Tuyen changed to growing mangosteen trees with high economic efficiency. This year, his family has had a bumper crop of mangosteens with high price. With more than 200 mangosteen trees, he has harvested around 3.5 tons of mangosteens, securing more than VND120mln in this crop.
Prospect of a specialized area on mangosteen trees
Thanh Tuyen is an agricultural commune with 116 hectares used for growing various fruit trees like mangosteens, mangoes, rambutans…There are also more than 200 hectares of rice cultivation with low economic efficiency plus hundreds of hectares of rubber trees. Realizing that mangosteen trees have a good development in this land, the local government has been instructed to implement the Project on mangosteen gardens development in association with tourism.
After three-year implementation of the project, Thanh Tuyen commune has developed 15 hectares of mangosteen trees. Till early 2014, Dau Tieng district has continued allowing Thanh Tuyen commune to changing 38 hectares of rice cultivation area into the model of growing mangosteen trees. The figure will further rise up. Under the project, the whole commune will have 150 hectares of mangosteen trees.
The good development of mangosteen trees with stable price in Thanh Tuyen commune, bringing a great source of income the local farmers is a clear thing, so there is no need for further discussion. More importantly, the local farmers have ensured a crop bumper with good price. This is a foundation for forming up a specialized area on fruit trees in tourism development.
Huynh Van Duong, Chairman of Thanh Tuyen commune’s Farmers’ Association said that thanks to propaganda work well realized, many local farmers have obviously realized the great economic efficiency of mangosteen trees in comparison with other plants, including rubber trees. Hence, the association’s training courses on how to grow this kind of tree have always got crowded with participants. Many local farmers have decided to change to growing mangosteen trees. This is a good sign for this land.
