Lai Thieu in Thuan An Town was once known as the land of fruits and ecotourism where visitors could enjoy original fruits with special flavors in dedicated space.Mimic Lai Thieu mangosteenOn DT745 street, we visited some garden homes at Hung Dinh Ward where we only saw trees without their fruits; however, plenty of stalls along the street were presenting the fruits that they introduced as Lai Thieu originated. Many have asked about the true origin to receive irritating reply by questions.

Tran Bringing the same question to authority officers at Hung Dinh Ward, we were informed that the fruits being sold on DT745 street were not from the locality as the season was coming to an end. On the other hand, mangosteen of Lai Thieu had been sold out as a registered brandname not on the streetside.Passing Ngang Bridge, we entered the local restaurants where customer luring habit persisted. Leading us to a place of a few arm chairs near a dyke surrounded by rubbish, dead leaves and mosquito, the owner blamed of too much visiting rate of visitors and the season ending time for such a mess.Lai Thieu mangosteen has been included in the listing of 50 most famous fruits in Vietnam under selection of Vietnamese Record Book Center; however, Lai Thieu mangosteen as a brandname is facing various obstacles and the fact that by the end of a season, mangosteen from other localities just rush in to mimic Lai Thieu brandname.Brandname revivalMr. Le Quoc Hung, Chair of Farmer Association of Hung Dinh Ward in Thuan An Town informed that out of 6 communes and wards, Vinh Phu in Lai Thieu now has very few mangosteen orchard left. Meantime, the 4 communes and wards of Hung Dinh, Binh Nham, An Thanh, and An Son, the fertile soils yield the best fruits. Currently, Hung Dinh orchard area is about 90ha in total which is the area promoted to be used for fruit planting to bring back the fruit brandname of Lai Thieu.Efforts of seeking measures to revive the brandname of local authority and people have yielded initial results on June 19, 2014 when Lai Thieu mangosteen became officially registered as a brandname.Mr. Nguyen Van Doi, a newly entitled excellent farmer of the province, was delighted at the news saying: “Thanks to the brandname, people shall know more about us, we are now worry-free about fruit selling. I shall make all efforts to improve income and quality of the products.”Meantime, Thuan An Town shall organize training courses for tour guides locally to innovate local tourism..By the efforts of local authority and functional agencies and local people, Lai Thieu fruits are on high hope of winning back trust and offering the best homeland delicacy to the visitors.Reported by Nhien Tran – Translated by Vi Bao
