To service vegetable market during Tet Holiday of Year of the Goat 2015, ever since lunar September, the provincial farmers have started sowing and improving vegetable planting soil. At the end of the year, majority of the soil area have been taken use of by farmers in more crops and circulation.
Busy preparation
The farmers, at the moment, are planting cucumber, bitter melon, Oriental onion (Allium chinense) in majority of soil areas. Root and fruit vegetables have longer growing period than leafy vegetables; thus, they are sowed a little bit earlier. Currently, farmers are actively caring for the sowed vegetables to harvest up to Tet Holiday - year of the goat. These vegetables are consumed greatly during the holiday, promising to deliver high economic yields.

According to the farmers, vegetables sold during Tet are higher in price and quantity by thrice to quadrupt than regular days. Vegetables grown in the season have higher productivity and less disease than the other crops, thus, higher income. Mr. Doan Van Lap in Hiep An Ward of Thu Dau Mot City said his family had been transferred with technology and grid house by Plant Protection Division in an area of 1,000m2. He has cultivated bitter melon in preparation for the upcoming Lunar New Year. It is important that high-tech orientation brings up higher productivity, less disease and stable development.
Oriental onion of high yields
Currently, Oriental onion has been harvested early on a number farms. For the growig area, the production would be adequate for harvesting in the days near Tet. For the past 10 years, short-term crops have contributed to improving the lives of many farmer families in the province. This year, the planting of Oriental onion costs lower than the previous year, at VND 21,000 a kilo, many households have increased acreage for Oriental onion. According to those families, for 1 kilo of Oriental onion seedlings, they could yield 15 kilos of Oriental onion for sales. Thanks to favorable weather conditions coupled with enhanced technical applications into production, Oriental onion yields this year are relatively high. The farmers have also formed cooperative groups to create favorable conditions for more stable consumption of agricultural produces.
Nguyen Thi Ngoc Loan, Chair of Hiep An Ward Farmer in Thu Dau Mot City said that Hiep An Ward has 12 hectares of vegetable crops for rotation of average yield at 20-25 tons a hectare.
