Vietnam, RoK striving for US$100 billion trade target by 2020

President Tran Dai Quang and his Republic of Korea counterpart Moon Jae-in have concurred to further enhance economic and trade links between the two nations towards the US$100 billion trade target by 2020.

The target was emphasized at their talks in Hanoi on March 24 following the welcome ceremony for Mr Moon Jae-in  on morning the same day.

At the talks, President Quang told his guest that Vietnam always greatly values ties with the Republic of Korea (RoK), saying he hopes that the RoK will continue sharing its experience for sustainable development for peace, stability, development and prosperity in the region and the wider world.

The two leaders consented to maintain annual delegation exchanges, improve the efficiency and frequency of exchange and dialogue mechanisms, and expand collaboration between the two nations' governments, legislative bodies, Party agencies and localities, and in key areas of diplomacy, national defence, security and legal enforcement.

In addition to discussing trade balance measures, they pledged to increase the efficiency of partnership across investment, engineering, energy, labour; consider science-technology a pillar to add fresh impetus to bilateral links, as well as broadening cooperation in culture, education, tourism and people-to-people exchange.

Quang said he welcomes Korean investments in large-scale infrastructure, industrial and smart urban areas, and equitisation of State-owned enterprises (SoE).

He suggested the RoK continue enhancing examination on agro-fishery products and chicken and pork-derived processed food, bring Vietnamese products to domestic and global distribution chains, provide Vietnam with development assistance and preferential credit, and effectively carry out the 2016 – 2020 credit frame agreement and financial cooperation deal.

The Vietnamese State leader lauded the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on sending and receiving workers to the RoK under the Employment Permit System programme, and wished that the RoK government will continue assisting Vietnamese expats living in the country.

The leaders agreed to further strengthen mutual support at international forums, and jointly deal with global challenges and non-traditional security issues. They underlined the need to ensure peace, security, maritime and aviation safety and freedom in the East Sea while expediting the settlement of conflicts and disputes in the East Sea through peaceful means in line with international law.

Quang hailed the RoK’s efforts in promoting inter-Korean dialogue and peacefully settling the nuclear issue of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and reiterated Vietnam’s unwavering policy of advocating denuclearisation in the Korean peninsula and constructive actions to boost dialogues for the sake of peace, security and stability in the Korean peninsula.

For his part, President Moon affirmed his nation's recognition of great importance to developing strategic cooperative partnership with Vietnam, which is seen as an important partner in its New Southern Policy.

He appreciated the regular exchange of visits between Vietnamese and Korean ministries, agencies and localities, and further strengthening of coordination in support and automobile industries towards a more balanced trade.

The Korean President promised to help Vietnam in human resources development, science-technology, information technology, environment management, agriculture, and extend bonds across transport, energy, infrastructure and smart urban areas.

The RoK will go ahead with projects to support Vietnam – RoK multicultural families, and Vietnamese brides living in the two countries, he said. He expressed hope that Vietnam will facilitate Korean investment in north-south highway and Long Thanh international airport projects.

After the talks, the two Presidents witnessed the signing of cooperation agreements and informed the media about the outcomes of the talks.

On the occasion, President Moon Jae-in invited President Tran Dai Quang to pay a State visit to the RoK in the near future and his invitation was graciously acepted.

Also earlier in the morning, President Tran Dai Quang and his counterpart Moon Jae-in visited the President Ho Chi Minh relic site at the Presidential Palace where Quang introduced him memories close to President Ho Chi Minh such as the stilt house, fish bond and Duong Xoai (Mango Path).
