Minister of Public Security Tran Dai Quang presided over a meeting held in Gia Lai province on June 28, reviewing the implementation of socio-economic development goals set for the Central Highlands in the first half of 2014 and outlining key tasks for the remainder of the year. Quang, who is also head of the Central Highlands Steering Committee, highlighted the socio-economic outcomes the region reaped in the reviewed period and asked regional provinces to make more efforts to realise future tasks. He suggested the provinces step up the checking of the implementation of an infrastructure development plan approved by the Ministry of Transport and realising a credit support package soon, with the aim of further boosting regional socio-economic growth. The region’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) posted an increase of 10.3 percent, while its industrial production value rose by 12.6 percent and its State budget collection was up 6.7 percent year-on-year, equivalent to 46 percent of the year’s plan. A 553km section of the Ho Chi Minh Highway running through the region was upgraded, with a combined capital of more than VND20 trillion (US$940 million). To date, ground clearance for key projects has been completed and the execution of the work has started. In the time ahead, efforts should be exerted to support locals living near hydropower plants to stabilise their production activities and lives. The Central Highlands includes the provinces of Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Dak Lak, Dak Nong and Lam Dong.                                                                                                                                              Nhan Dan Online/VNA

Empowering youth for sustainable development forum opens

Empowering youth for sustainable development forum opens

A forum aimed at educating and empowering Vietnamese youth with the capacity to participate in matters that will impact sustainable development opened at Bach Ma National Park in Thua Thien Hue province on June 28. The forum attracted 40 outstanding young people selected from 400 profiles nationwide, who shared actions pertaining to the environment and community. Themed “Be Active Citizens”, it focuses discussions on climate change and natural disasters, energy, green economy, bio-diversification, the poor and those who are vulnerable to natural disasters and climate change. Young citizens will realise challenges facing Vietnam to build initiatives towards a sustainable future. At the opening ceremony, Director of the British Council in Vietnam Chris Brown said that Vietnam is entering a “golden population structure” period with nearly 50% belonging to age groups from 0-14 and over 65. As a result, the forum has a direct impact on participants who will be ambassadors on environment and sustainable development with specific actions. The Vietnam Youth and Sustainable Development Summit (VYS) 2014 - a follow-up activity in the program “Be Active Citizens” launched by the British Council in 2009 which has carried out successfully in 38 countries with the participation of more than 530,000 young people, positively impacting 15 million people. The Center of Environmental Training and Communications (CETAC) Director Tran Phong under the Environment Department said sustainable development is highlighted in the country’s socio-economic development plans and strategies. The event will provide a good chance for youth to meet and propose initiatives and solutions for environmental protection, ecology, energy saving and sustainable development. The forum running until July 2 was held by Live& Learn, the British Council, the European Commission - Humanitarian Aid & Civil Protection (ECHO), the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Vietnam and the CETAC.                                                                                                                                                                            VOV
